  The 25th Harbin International SnowSculpture Competition was held atSun Island Park in Harbin, northeastChina’s Heilongjiang Province, on January10-13, attracting 25 teams from 10 countries.

  Among the contestants was Kenyansculptor Gerard Oroo Motondi, whoformed a joint team with three other artistsfrom Canada, Viet Nam and Hungary.

  Their work was named Power ofNature, featuring four bufalos watchingin all directions in vigilance to protect theherd they are part of. It won the team anexcellence award. The first-prize winnerwas a Mongolian team with their workSave Me, featuring a kangaroo and a koalabear in Australia’s fire. The contestwas part of the city’s international ice andsnow sculpture festival that has been heldsince 1963 and is regarded as one of theworld’s top ice and snow festivals, joiningthe ranks of Japan’s Sapporo SnowFestival, Canada’s Quebec Winter Carnivaland Norway’s Holmenkollen Ski Festival.

  As the capital city of HeilongjiangProvince, one of the coldest places inChina, Harbin features a number of culturaland economic activities closely relatedto snow and ice in the winter season.

  Apart from ice and snow sculpturecontests, it holds events such as ice andsnow carnivals, ice lantern shows, andvarious ice and snow sports. It is China’stop destination of snow and ice tourism,attracting about 100 million tourists tothe city each year.
