Guinea-Bissau’s former Prime MinisterUmaro Sissoco Embalo has won thepresidential election held on December29, 2019, the West African nation’s electoralcommission said. According to the provisionalresults published on January 16 by theNational Election Commission of GuineaBissau,Embalo, candidate of the Movementfor Democratic Alternation, obtained 53.55percent of the votes during the presidentialelection runof held on December 29 last year.
He was competing with another formerPrime Minister Domingo Simoes Pereira,candidate of the African Party for theIndependence of Guinea and Cape Verde(PAIGC), who won 46.45 percent of the votes.Born in 1974, Embalo served as GuineaBissau’sprime minister under the presidencyof Jose Mario Vaz from November 2016 toJanuary 2018.
