During the period, Huawei shippedmore than 33 million smartphones andtopped 5G smartphone shipments witha 78-percent market share.
Oppo and Vivo remained insecond and third places, respectively,in China’s smartphone market, whileApple moved up one position tonumber four and Xiaomi rounded thetop five.
In 2019, smartphone shipmentsin China hit 369 million units, down 7percent year on year.
Canalys attributed the Q4 shipmentcontraction to a drastic slowdownof 4G smartphone purchases andconsumers’ weaker-than-expecteddemand for 5G smartphones.
While estimating 5G smartphonesto exceed 150 million units in 2020,Nicole Peng, Vice President of Mobilityat Canalys, said that competitionamong vendors will be cutthroat assmaller vendors hope to break themarket dominance of major brands.
ImprovingPerformance
China’s listed banks posted improvingperformances in 2019 thanks to steadyeconomic growth.
By February 6, 21 listed banks onthe Shanghai and Shenzhen bourseshad released their financial reports.The annual revenue in 2019 totaled1.3 trillion yuan ($186.3 billion), up 14.11percent year on year.
Net profits rose 10.9 percent yearon year to 400.15 billion yuan ($57.3billion), with 18 banks seeing their yearon-yeargrowth rate exceed 10 percent.
All these banks saw growth in bothrevenue and net profit, while ChinaMerchants Bank, one of the largestlenders in China, led the gains withrevenue rising to 269.75 billion yuan($38.6 billion) and net profit nearing 93billion yuan ($13.3 billion).
The quality of the banking sector’sassets also improved, with the nonperformingloan ratio of 17 listed banksgoing down from 2018.
